Piedmontese vine-growing has now been
experiencing abnormal climatic conditions for several years, and the
2007 vintage was no different. The first unusual element was the
complete absence of snow during the winter, and as a result a lack of
water supply, as shown by very low rain gauge values. The factor that
had the strongest effect on the vintage, however, was the exceptional
temperatures from March to May, when minimums and maximums were well
above the average. April proved to be one of the hottest for 30 years,
with temperatures 2-3°C higher than the seasonal average. All the
varieties responded to the abnormal heat by undergoing bud burst about
15-20 days earlier than usual, around the middle of March.
