Weather-wise, the 2008 can be defined as a "classic" Piedmontese vintage, especially in terms of the amount of rainfall and when it was heaviest. Many vintages in the ‘70s and ‘80s were similar, but fortunately the hot climate experienced over the last decade returned to make itself felt during the critical ripening period in the final run-up to the harvest. Snowfall was average over the winter, and was spread over 2-3 periods, resulting in a good water supply. Higher than average temperatures were recorded over the first three months of the year however, so the snow did not stay on the ground for long. In April and May, on the other hand, cloudy conditions led to much lower temperatures than usual, postponing bud break by as much as 20 days compared to recent vintages, and resulting in the lengthening
